Radio Broadcasting Company
Entercom is one of the five largest radio broadcasting companies in the United States, with a nationwide portfolio of 110 stations in 23 markets, including San Francisco, Boston, Seattle, Denver, and Portland. Known for developing unique and highly successful locally programmed stations, Entercom is home to some of radio's most distinguished brands and compelling personalities. They are also the radio broadcast partner of the Boston Red Sox, Boston Celtics, Kansas City Royals, New Orleans Saints and Buffalo Sabres.
Entercom's radio stations have received numerous awards, including multiple Edward R. Murrow Awards for excellence in broadcast journalism and National Association of Broadcasters (NAB) Marconi Awards for excellence in radio broadcasting. According to the Kansas City Director of Engineering, Ken Wolf, "Radio is extremely competitive with everyone looking to be the loudest, cleanest and clearest. The program directors are always after us to sharpen up the sound."
With the advent of high definition radio and the evolution of digital technology in broadcasting, sound quality is less an aesthetic choice and more of a business imperative. Car audio systems that come as standard equipment now equal the sonic performance of custom systems of a decade ago. Listeners at home are even more demanding. Wolf explains, "We have a classical station in high definition and that audience is tuning in on high-end stereos. If there is something wrong with the sound we will certainly hear about it!"
Like most group station operations, the engineering staff finds it challenging to closely monitor the audio quality of all stations…all at the same time…24 hours a day. Entercom relies on the radio talent to be vigilant in evaluating the audio feed. "The jocks are listening to the signal, they know what it is supposed to sound like", Wolf adds, "You want them to have the best monitors possible so they can hear even the most subtle flaws - and these KRKs let us do just that. Plus, they are able to handle the demands of our rock DJs who have a habit of really turning it up."
